October 21, 1951 - March 11, 2025 (age 73)
Don Alphalus Johnson, Jr., 73, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2025 in Hyrum, UT after tender hours spent with close friends and family. Don was born in Roosevelt, UT on October 21, 1951, to Don Alphalus Johnson, Sr., and Georgianna Louise Truby Johnson. He was the second oldest of 11 children, and spent most of his childhood growing up in Bountiful, UT. As a child Don had a passion for horses and learned to hunt and work hard while working alongside his father on the family farm. However, once Don received his driver's license, his love for horses turned into a love for all things with a motor and wheels.
Don graduated from Viewmont High School in 1970, and then briefly attended Brigham Young University in Provo where Don’s cool sense of style and long hair proved unfavorable amongst the faculty members. Don eventually withdrew from college and decided to pursue other adventures of life outside of the classroom. In 1971 one such adventure led him to Europe for three months, where Don and his cousins, Randy Johnson and Buzz Neilsen, and later his father, Don, Sr., made lifelong memories of Morocco and the surrounding countries.
Don became a father to Isaac (Ike) in 1976. In 1983 Don married Sonya Ann Adair (later divorced), and together they became parents to five children: Sarah, Elijah (Eli), Jesse, Race and Kiah. Don, Sonya and their kids moved from Utah County to Paradise, UT in 1991 as Don’s dream home came to life one log at a time when he personally hand-built their family log cabin. Don loved working together as a family building their log home. It was an accomplishment they were all very proud of, and many great memories were made during their 20 years living in Paradise.
As a determined and hard worker Don held many jobs, including construction, where he suffered a terrible accident when he fell 40 feet. One of his most notable business ventures was when he opened Rocky Mountain Pawn (later renamed Rocky's Pawn and Title), in Hyde Park, UT. Don ran the business with his wife and children, and the
family dogs would accompany Don daily at work. The Johnsons enjoyed meeting new people and making lots of small talk, and owning and operating the pawn shop fed Don's obsession for firearms! Don retired and closed the pawn shop in September 2013.
Don is survived by his children: Ike Kenny of San Antonio, TX, Sarah (Roger) Lundquist of New Harmony, UT, Eli Johnson of Logan, UT, Jesse Johnson of Logan, Race (Amanda) Johnson of Hyrum, UT, and Kiah Johnson of Logan, UT; his siblings: Debbie and Glenn (deceased), Andy and Tally, Kristin and Gary, Sam and Laura, Nick and Tami, Jody, Melissa and Clay, Molly, Tim, Tom and Tina; and his grandchildren: Nixon, Rylee, Beckett, Lincoln, Kason, Adri and Kian.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Don and Jan, his former wife Sonya Johnson, and many, many of Don’s beloved family dogs.
The family would like to especially thank Aaron with Intermountain Hospice for the connection he made and special care he took of Don in his final days, and Kurtis with Myer’s Mortuary for the abundant assistance he has provided to Don’s family. Final arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Myer’s Mortuary of Brigham City.
